![]() The vessel still sits (listing) in Roderick Bay, just off Big Ngella Island. The old World Discoverer was refitted and extensively refurbished in 1996 but was wrecked just 4 years later - in 2000 (on April 30th) - after striking a reef in the Solomon Islands (Ngella/Florida Islands) while navigating the Sandfly Passage. Note: The new World Discoverer is the namesake of the 1974-built World Discoverer (IMO 7349053) which was constructed by the German shipbuilder SSW-Schichau Seebeckwerft (1950-founded/2009-defunct). The vessel (IMO number 9904924) is currently Portugal- flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Madeira/Funchal. The shipbuilder is WestSEA (naval shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal). The ship World Discoverer is the 5th vessel in an initially planned 10-ship fleet of Mystic Cruises, grouping the sisterships World Explorer (2019), World Voyager (2021), World Navigator (2021), World Traveller (2022), World Seeker (2023), World Discoverer (2023), World Adventurer (2024). The vessel is owned by Mystic Invest Holding (via the subsidiary Mystic Cruises USA) and operated under charter by the subsidiary AOV-Atlas Ocean Voyages (USA-based travel company/brand owned by Mystic Invest) as well as by other small cruise companies. The 2023-built MS World Discoverer cruise ship is a newbuild passenger vessel designed for operations in the polar regions (Arctic and Antarctica).
